The Impact of Social Networking

By far the most powerful of the Web 2.0 tools to date are social networks, such as MySpace, FaceBook, Linked-in, and others.

Tens of millions of dollars are currently being invested in social networks and technologies that facilitate social networking:

The extraordinary valuations are based on “endlessly replicating” access to potential customers.   As soon as an individual (or company) sets up a social networking site for say, motorcycle enthusiasts, each new member circulates and invites their circle of contacts, and so forth. In other words, each new link begets additional new links, ad infinitum.

The result is a sci-fi marketing dream.  Not only are the “views” constantly expanding, but the individual networks are ripe for highly targeted advertising.

This phenomenon is the viral expansion loop.  An ad executive in Fast Company magazine describes a viral loop as “the most advanced direct marketing strategy being developed in the world right now.”[1]
